Park City
Home to several events during the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics, Park City is more than just a scenic Main Street of shops and bars (though they aren't bad, either). With seven peaks and nine bowls, there's no shortage of terrain, including a run named after legendary women's racer Picabo Street and the colorfully named Widow Maker. And forget that misconception about Utah not partying. On Main Street, nothing could be farther from the truth. You don't have to look hard to find bars, live music, and every kind of restaurant imaginable.

Deer Valley
Opened in 1981 and allowing only skiers, Deer Valley is a relative newcomer, but it's quickly become a permanent fixture in any debate about the world's best ski resorts. Dry, light Utah powder blankets four diverse mountains. Empire Canyon is home to eight chutes and three bowls. The resort even hosted slalom, aerials, and mogul events during the 2002 Olympic Games. Deer Valley also prides itself on fine dining, as evidenced by The Mariposa, rated number one in the Zagat Restaurant Guide.

The Canyons
Just four miles north of downtown Park City, The Canyons is made up of eight peaks with everything from gentle beginner slopes to legit expert terrain and a host of glades. Ski the powder stashes in the trees and chutes accessed by the 9990 Chair, named after the elevation it climbs to. There's also no shortage of luxury at The Canyons, and the convenient, spacious base village is proof of that. The best part is, with 3,500 acres of terrain, there's no such thing as a crowded slope.

  Snowbird/Alta
Snowbird
Like Alta, Snowbird is in Little Cottonwood Canyon, where huge storms are some sort of birthright for local skiers. Ride the aerial tram to 11,000 feet and listen to the announcer's trail report. Then ski 2,900 vertical feet to the tram house. The 'Bird racks up 500 inches of snow per year and, with terrain like 50-degree Great Scott, your heart rate will be high, too. The base village offers restaurants and bars with live music. After skiing deep powder all day, a massage at the Cliff Spa is a sensible end-of-day alternative.

Alta
Tucked away up Little Cottonwood Canyon and for skiers only, Alta is a rare place that feels like a hidden gem. But the Alta experience is no secret, and the resort continues to prove that skiing can still be simple and totally thrilling. High Rustler and Hourglass Chute are just a sampling of the rugged terrain, and beginner runs are sprinkled all over. In addition to the soulful experience it offers, Alta, which connects to neighboring Snowbird, is known for epic powder days you have to experience to believe.

Fourteen miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon and 35 minutes from Salt Lake City, Solitude is a rugged, but serene setting. The resort combines a mild climate with big storms that drop 500 inches of snow per year, meaning there's no shortage of sunny powder days. There's something for everyone with three wide-open bowls, tree runs, chutes, and cruisers for beginners. Experts will love Honeycomb Canyon.
